Large seed size

Large seed size

Koto on left and large seeded buckwheat on the right.

Self-pollinating lines are being developed with increased seed size, which allows for increased flour recovery. The large seeded types also allows for alternative uses, such as buckwheat sprouts. The large seeded lines are used in the backcrossing program to rapidly increase seed size in inter-specific hybrids. The larger seed size also appears to allow for increased seedling growth, resulting in faster canopy development and thus better broad leaf weed control.
