Flower clusters
Modified axillary flower cluster in self-pollinating buckwheat
Long axillary flower clusters, with increased flower numbers, have been developed in cross pollinating buckwheat to aid in increased yields. These flower cluster types have a large number of flowers which are within the plant canopy and are therefore protected from shattering by wind. These flower clusters, however, have more flowers than are required in self-pollinating lines. Self-pollinating lines are being developed with modified axillary flower clusters which have lower flower numbers, which allow for increased yields.
