Cold tolerance
Tall plants have cold tolerance as compared to small non-cold tolerant plants.
Frost tolerant lines can be seeded earlier in the spring and so they encounter cooler soil temperatures. This may delay seedling emergence, by as much as 4-5 days, and may allow for increased weed competition. Many weeds have cold tolerance and grow relatively rapidly. Broad leaf weed control in buckwheat is normally accomplished by the buckwheat growing faster and crowding out the competition, therefore cold tolerant types are required. Cold tolerant self-pollinating lines have been identified and are being developed to overcome this potential problem.
