Self-pollinating buckwheat
Self-pollinating buckwheat lines.
Self-pollinating buckwheat, which are self compatible and have homomorphic flowers, have been developed from the cross Fagopyrum esculentum X F. homotropicum. Cleistogamous flowering reduces the chance of out crossing due to insects or wind. As 100% of the flowers set seeds, as does the parent F. homotropicum, seed yields are substantially increased. Many highly desirable characteristics have been identified in the resulting progeny which has allowed the development of lines which have all the characteristics of common buckwheat plus the desirable traits. This has allowed for the development of lines having traits that are not present in common buckwheat. These include enhanced green testa, frost tolerance and nutraceutical components.
