Pericarp color
Self-pollinating buckwheat with red pericarp.
Red pericarp lines are being developed for identification of different types of buckwheat. The intensity of the red pericarp varies from marginal red to dark red. These colors are being combined with white flower color. In Asia most of the common buckwheat has pink flowers that are linked to red pericarp and therefore they occur together. The combination of white flowers, together with red pericarp has been used in the past as a marker for varieties developed at Morden.
