Large leaf
Leaf size of Koto on the left as compared to large leafed types on right.
Weed control in common buckwheat is mainly accomplished by rapid development of a canopy that shades out any weed competition. Larger leafed types, of self-pollinating buckwheat, are being developed to aid in the speed of canopy development, thus increasing crop competition. It has also been found that large leaves at the top of the plant buffer plant movement during high winds and thus significantly reduce seed shattering. Large leaves increase the leaf area index and therefore may also provide more photosynthates for the developing seeds, thus increasing yields.
