Abstract: Crop improvement programs on common buckwheat have been documented for over one hundred years although yield and other desirable improvement characteristics have not kept pace with other larger domesticated crops. Increased economic importance that is being placed on Tartary buckwheat products due to there increased health benefits should see increased efforts to improve this species. The development of self-pollinating buckwheat has received increased efforts over the past decade and appears to be an area that can be utilized for the improvement of underutilized common buckwheat.

Key words: buckwheat, crop improvement, plant breeding
